Beckwith, Sherrill, Rhoades Win Big Ten Crowns on Day Two
Feb. 28, 2010
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Indiana finished the women's Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships in third-place with 83 points. Leading the way for the Hoosiers were seniors Ashley Rhoades and Molly Beckwith and junior Faith Sherrill, all of whom claimed Big Ten titles. Beckwith set a new Big Ten Championships record in the 600m.
Beckwith improved on her own school record in the 600m, finishing in 1:27.22 to break the facility and championship records. Beckwith was more than two seconds faster than her closest competitor for her first career Big Ten title. Sophomore Jordan Gray also scored in the 600m, finishing fifth. Beckwith won another medal on the day, finishing third in the mile. Beckwith's time of 4:40.88 is the fourth fastest in school history.
Sherrill won her first career conference title a day after claiming runner-up honors in the shot put. Sherrill won the weight throw with a heave of 20.35m (66-9.25). The mark is more than a foot improvement on her own IU record. Sherrill was one of two Hoosiers to score in the event as senior Kristen Crawford took fifth. The two combined for 14 points in the weight throw. Sherrill contributed 18 points to the Hoosier cause in the meet.
Rhoades won the high jump with an NCAA auto clearance of 1.85m (6-0.75). She improved on her own school record by one centimeter. Rhoades' jump is her third of over six feet. She is the only Hoosier to ever break that barrier. Rhoades was the conference champion outdoors in 2009.
Also taking the podium for IU was junior Lindsey Hartman who was third in the 800m. Her time of 2:08.64 marks her first career NCAA qualifying time. She bettered the provisional standard by .36 seconds.
Also scoring for IU were Chelsea Blanchard in the mile (6th, 4:43.82), Wendi Robinson in the 5,000m (6th, 16:30.95), Sarah Pease in the 5,000m (7th, 16:36.15) and Ann-Marie Clarke, Beckwith, Ashley Baker and Hartman in the 4x400m relay (6th, 3:44.30).
The Hoosiers return to action with the Alex Wilson Invitational on March 5-6. For complete coverage of IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
