    Johnson Hits Regional Qualifying Mark at Stanford Invitational

    PALO, ALTO, Calif. - Senior Courtney Johnson posted a regional qualifying mark in the 100-meter hurdles as the Indiana women's track and field team competed in the final day of competition at the 33rd Annual Stanford Invitational on Cobb Track at Angell Field on Saturday, March 31, in Palo Alto, Calif.

    After clocking a time of 13.98 to qualify for today's final, Johnson ran a 13.63 in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles to be the first Hoosier of today's competition to reach a regional qualifying mark. Johnson placed eighth in the race.

    Senior Stacey Clausing placed fourth for the Hoosiers in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.95. She was followed by senior Michelle Huber (27th, 58.54), sophomore Audrey Smoot (28th, 58.70) and junior Lauren Keefe (36th, 61.48). In her first career appearance in the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Caity Lauer clocked a time of 4:42.00 for 68th place overall.

    Freshman Vera Neuenswander cleared 3.71 meters for fifth in the pole vault. Her mark ranks third all-time in the IU outdoor record book. Sophomore Wendi Robinson clocked a time of 17:00.43 to place 17th in the 5,000-meter run.

    Senior Jessica Gall wrapped up the evenings events as she recorded a time of 33:54.65 for 16th place in the 10,000-meter run for a provisional qualification for the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 7-9, in Sacramento, Calif. Her time is a personal best and ranks second in the IU record book.

     

     

    The women's 4x100-meter team also competed this afternoon, finishing fifth with a time of 46.55, while the 4x400-meter relay team placed 11th in 3:50.64.

    "The women's team trained very hard during the off season, and have a done really good job running through the effects of heavy training," IU interim head women's track and field coach Judy Wilson said. "We got a regional qualification out of Courtney Johnson and are looking forward to getting some more at home next weekend."

    The Hoosiers will be back in action next weekend when they host the Indiana Relays at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on Friday-Saturday, April 6-7.
