Hoosiers Post Successful Day in 99th Running of Drake Relays and at Stan Lyons Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana track and field teams posted successful outings in the 99th running of the Drake Relays and at Butler's Stan Lyons Invitational on Saturday, April 26. The Hoosiers day included two Drake Relays titles as senior Kyle Jenkins won the triple jump and IU's men's distance medley team placed first, while senior Courtney Johnson clocked the second-fastest time in school history in the 100-meter hurdles.
Jenkins recorded a distance of 16.30 meters (53-05.75) for first place. With the wind reading at +4.8, Jenkins jump did not qualify him for the regional meet. The men's distance medley relay team, made up of Ben Hubers, Ryan Smith, Evan Bardach and Brennon Plotner, crossed the finish line in 9:49.05 to win the relay title. The men's 4x100-meter relay team took third in the finals of today's event. Marcus Thigpen, Devin Pipkin, Wil Glover and Keith Heerdegen clocked a time of 40.35. Freshman Andy Weatherford clocked a time of 9:14.71 to take eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
On the women's side in Des Moines, Johnson finished fifth in the final of the 100-meter hurdles in 13.37 for a new personal best improving her regional qualifying time.
In Indianapolis on Saturday, IU earned more regional qualifiers in several events. Ashley Rhoades cleared 1.75 meters (5-08.75) to earn her trip to the regional meet. Paul Haas recorded a mark of 51.86 meters (170-02.00) in the discus for a new personal best and a regional qualification. Tiffany Howard and Faith Sherrill matched each other in the shot put, recording marks of 14.41 meters (47-03.50) to win the event. That mark was also qualified them for the regional. Sherrill was also successful in the discus, finished second with a personal-best and another regional mark of 49.14 meters (161-03.00).
The Hoosiers will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Columbus, Ohio and compete in the Jesse Owens Track Classic on Friday-Saturday, May 2-3.
