Gall, Hattendorf Pace IU in Opening Day of Big Tens

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana women's track and field team opened competition at the 2006 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Michigan State's Ralph Young Track and Field Complex on May 12. Led by strong performances from Jessica Gall and Lindsay Hattendorf in the 10k, the Hoosiers finished the day in eighth place.
Jean Schaffer, the Hoosiers' only heptathlete, finished the day (four events) in 12th place with 2,598 points. Schaffer turned in a time of 15.58 in the 100m hurdles, followed by clearing 1.59m (5-02.5) in the high jump. In the heptathlon's edition of the shot put, Schaffer threw an 8.64m (28-04.25) and finished the day with a 27.56 in the 200m.
Schaffer will continue her heptathlon pursuit on Saturday, May 13 at 10:15 a.m., with the long jump.
In the 10,000m, Gall finished in fourth place with a time of 34:01.00, while Hattendorf took 10th with a personal-best time of 35:01.99.
The Hoosier women finished day one in eight place with five points.
