Four Advance to Finals as IU Ends Day in Ninth Place

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana women's track and field team sits in ninth place with 15 points at the conclusion of the second day of competition at the 2006 Outdoor Big Ten Championships at Michigan State's Ralph Young Track and Field Complex on May 13. Stacey Clausing advanced to the finals in both the 200m and the 400m, while teammate Ara Towns moved on in the 100m and the 200m. Larra Overton and Wendi Robinson advanced to the finals in the 1,500m as well. Additionally, the Hoosier 4x100m relay team will compete in tomorrow's finals.
Jean Schaffer, Indiana's only heptathlete, finished in 12th place with a personal-best 4,005 points. Schaffer took 12th in the long jump with a leap of 4.83m (15-10.25), claimed ninth in the javelin with a throw of 30.82m (101-01) and concluded the grueling heptathlon with a 12th-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:56.28.
IU's 4x100m relay team advanced to the finals in the event with a fourth-best prelim finish. The Hoosier team comprised of Price, Towns, Kyndal Carr and Zakiya Robinson crossed the line in 46.33.
Overton advanced to the finals of the 1,500m. Overton crossed the line in fifth place with a time of 4:31.81. Teammate Wendi Robinson took 12th with a personal-best time of 4:32.55.
In the prelims of the 400m, Clausing moved on to the finals with a fifth-place time of 55.04. Audrey Smooth came in 15th in the event with a personal-best time of 57.72.
Towns earned her second finals nod of the day in the 100m. Towns continued to dominate in the event by taking first with an impressive time of 11.54. Robinson took 11th in the 100m with a mark of 12.14.
In the 100m hurdles, Price missed the finals cut by one place with a ninth-best time of 14.03. Courtney Johnson took 10th in the event with a time of 14.10.
Clausing earned her second ticket of the day to tomorrow's finals, while Towns notched her third after both qualified for the 200m championship. Towns finished in seventh with a time of 24.08, while Clausing turned in 24.27 en route to the finals.
Kelly Siefker scored for IU in the 3,000m steeplechase. Siefker took fifth in the event with a time of 10:29.55. Teammate Stephanie Greer finished in 11th place, crossing the line in 10:57.05, while Ashley Sommer turned in a personal-best 11:07.87 for 14th place.
