More Hoosiers Headed to NCAAs
May 28, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three Hoosiers punched their tickets to Eugene, Oregon, in two weeks. Derek Drouin advanced in the men's high jump, Molly Beckwith advanced in the 800m and Kelsie Ahbe advanced in the pole vault. The 3,000m steeplechase races were delayed until Saturday due to weather.
Drouin cleared three bars without a miss to advance in the high jump. He was one of three jumpers without a miss on the day. The final height proved to be 2.16m (7-1), whittling the field down to 12 advancers. Drouin heads to his fourth NCAA Championships in his two years at Indiana. He will look to match his efforts from the indoor season, when he won an NCAA high jump crown.
Beckwith ran the second fastest time of the meet to win her heat of the 800m. She finished in 2:03.02 despite running in the slowest of three heats. She was 2.32 seconds better than Charlene Lipsey of LSU, who was second in the heat. Beckwith advances to her seventh national meet over the past three years.
Ahbe cleared 4.00m (13-1.5) on her first attempt to earn her first NCAA Championship berth. Ahbe was on of only four athletes to clear the height in one attempt. Ahbe's advancement to the meet marks the fourth-straight year a Hoosier will compete in the women's pole vault at outdoor nationals. The clearance was the second of Ahbe's career over four meters.
The Hoosiers' continue action in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday, May 29. For complete coverage of IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
