Hoosiers Move On After Day One of the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - Two Hoosiers moved on for the Indiana track and field team after the first day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, June 11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Senior Kiwan Lawson jumped 7.95 meters (26.01.00) to earn a spot in tomorrow night's finals of the long jump. Lawson jumped his best mark on his first attempt to qualify. His mark tied him for third in the prelims with Arizona State's Matt Turner.
Also earning a trip to the finals was junior Jeff Coover in the pole vault. Coover cleared 5.25 meters (17-02.75) on his third attempt in his flight to earn a tie for first in the preliminary round. He cleared 4.95 meters on his first attempt and then 5.10 meters before vaulting his final mark.
Also competing for the Hoosiers in today's action was sophomore Molly Beckwith in the 800-meters. Beckwith clocked a time of 2:09.20 to finish 22nd in the preliminary round. Freshman Stephanie Chin finished 12th overall in the prelims of the pole vault with a mark of 3.90 meters (12-09.50).
Indiana returns to action tomorrow at Drake Stadium as senior Courtney Johnson will compete in the first round of the 100-meter hurdles at 5:30 p.m. ET. Lawson will compete in the finals of the long jump at 8:30 p.m. On Friday, senior Abbie Stechschulte will open competition in the heptathlon with the 100-meter hurdles at 2 p.m. Senior Kyle Jenkins will compete in the qualifying round of the triple jump at 5:15 p.m. Coover will also jump in the finals of the pole vault on Friday at 5:15 p.m.
