Howard Claims All-America Honors on Day Two at NCAAs
June 11, 2009
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Day two of the NCAA Outdoor Championships saw senior Tiffany Howard reel in her first career All-America honors. Howard is IU's first female outdoor All-American since 2007, when Jessica Gall garnered the honors. Howard took ninth in the shot put. Juniors Molly Beckwith and Wendi Robinson saw their meets draw to a close on the night as well.
Howard took ninth place for the first All-America honors of her career. Her heave of 16.04 (52-7.5) makes her the seventh outdoor All-American in the shot put for the IU women's program. She is first outdoor All-American in the event since Katrin Koch won the NCAA title in 1992. She is the seventeenth All-American in the shot put for Indiana including indoor competition. Howard was just four inches out of scoring a point for the Hoosiers. Howard will compete at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 24-28.
Robinson took 15th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 34:57.83. Beckwith was unable to qualify for the 800-meter finals, running a time of 2:04.87. She finished less than a second out of fifth and the final qualifying mark. Beckwith and Robinson will also compete at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Three Hoosiers will see action on Friday, wrapping up Indiana's competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Junior Ashley Rhoades will compete in the high jump finals at 5:00 p.m. ET, sophomore Sarah Pease will run the 3,000m steeplechase final at 7:25 p.m. ET and junior Vera Neuenswander will be in the pole vault final at 8:00 p.m. ET.
