January 23, 1999 WOMEN'S TRACK DEFEATS OHIO STATE MEN FALL TO TENNESSEE ON LAST EVENT Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana Women's Track and Field team defeated Ohio State and the men finished a close second to Tennessee Saturday at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse.
The men's team battled with Tennessee down to the wire as Ohio State fell behind. The Hoosiers tied the Volunteers (92-92) after the 11th event of the day and trailed Tennessee by two points (119-117) with only the 4x400m relay remaining.
The relay teams from Ohio State and Tennessee outraced the Hoosiers, who scored third and finished second in the team scoring.
Three Hoosiers won on the men's side: senior Tom Chorny won the mile (4:09.02), junior Russell Brooks won the 200m (21.60), and freshman Greg Yeldell won the triple jump (14.96m; 49-1).
Brooks and freshman Raheem Ellis both reached the NCAA provisional mark in the 60m dash. Brooks finished second (6.72) and Ellis third (6.74) in the event.
Two Hoosiers set records school and track records. IU sophomore Jennifer Brown did it in winning the 20 pound weight throw (17.56m; 57-7 1/2), and junior Angela McGregor cleared 3.05m (10-0) to win the pole vault.
IU freshman Tia Trent won the 600m dash (1:33.61), sophomore Rachelle Weiss won the triple jump (12.29m; 40-4), sophomore Lorraine Dunlop captured the 60m dash (7.50), senior Traci Knudsen took the mile (5:06.46), and freshman Krista Keir set the meet record and reached the NCAA provisional mark in the shot put (15.23m; 49-11 3/4).
