    Boone Qualifies for NCAAs in 200m at Cannon IV Classic

    PLAINFIELD Ind. -- The Indiana men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in their fifth meet of the season on Friday and Saturday at the Cannon IV Classic, hosted by Butler University, in Plainfield, Ind. Sophomore Aarik Wilson was the highlight of the weekend for the men’s team as he jumped 16.56m (54-04.00) in the triple jump to automatically qualify for this season’s NCAA Championships. On the women’s side, senior Rachelle Boone also posted an NCAA-qualifying mark, running the 200m in 23.60. Boone has already qualified to compete at the championships in the 60m.

    Sophomore Ara Towns finished third in the 60m with a time of 7.54. In the 200m, Boone picked up the win in 23.60 and senior Danielle Carruthers placed third with a time of 24.77. Sophomore Karla Marshall ran a season-best time of 25.31 to finish ninth.

    The 60m hurdles race featured two of the nation’s best hurdlers. IU’s Carruthers (8.24) finished runner-up to Illinois’ Perdita Felicien (8.23) by just 0.01 of a second.

    Hoosier seniors Rose Richmond and Tandra Foster places second and third respectively, in the long jump. Both were competing for only the second time this season after returning from hamstring injuries last weekend. Richmond jumped 6.10m (20-00.25) and Foster posted a mark of 6.00 (19-08.25).

    In the Mile, sophomore Mindy Peterson ran a time of 4:55.84, a season-best, and placed fifth. Junior Audrey Geisler also recorded a season-best time of 4:56.83 to place eighth.Sophomore Larra Overton ran a career-best 2:14.04 in the 800m, finishing fifth. Freshman Jessica Gall ran the 3000m in a season-best 9:56.15 to take fourth and freshman Lindsay Hattendorf placed eighth in the 5000m with a season-best time of 17:17.68.

    Freshman Andrea Dalla Rosa won the shot put for the second straight week with a distance of 15.28m..

    On the men's side, Wilson set indoor personal-bests in both the long and triple jumps. In the long jump, he recorded a distance of 7.61m (24-11.75) to meet an NCAA provisional mark. His triple jump of 16.56m also set a meet record and is the second-best indoor mark in IU history.

    Senior Matt Harris ran a season-best 7.99 in the 60 hurdles. Harris’ career-best time is a 7.98, set on two other occassions in 2001 and 2002. In the 60m, junior Contrell Ash (6.980) and freshman Andre Grimes (7.00) posted fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively. Ash also ran a season-best time of 21.79 in the 200m.

    Sophomore Tom Burns placed fifth in the Mile, running a time of 4:14.94. Junior Nathan Gooden (8:19.26) and freshman Sean Jefferson (8:22.72) took third and fourth in the 3000m.

    Junior Mike Minton won the shot put with a distance of 16.84m and Ryan Ketchum place second with a mark of 16.56m. Sophomore Wil Fleming threw a career-best 15.64m to take fourth in the shot put and also placed fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 17.32m.

    Indiana returns home to host the Hoosier Hills meet on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
