HOOSIERS IN FIFTH PLACE AT BIG TEN WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Columbus, Ohio--On the strength of it women's shot putters, the Indiana University women's track and field team is in fifth place after the first day of competition at the Big Ten Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Ohio State.
Jennifer Brown (51-2.25), Heather Colyer (50-00.75), and Krista Keir (50-00.75) placed second, third, and fourth respectively in the shot put to give the Hoosiers 19 team points. Indiana women's head coach Randy Heisler was pleased with the efforts of his throwers. "All three threw really well and were near their personal bests," commented Heisler. "I certainly can't complain with their effort. All three were over 50 feet."
Indiana picked up nine more points in the pole vault as Cori McLeod placed third (3.36m) and Melissa Banton was sixth at 2.91m.
The Hoosiers will send nine competitors for tomorrow's finals. Lorraine Dunlop had the third fastest mark in the 60m (7.48) and the seventh best in the 200m (24.82). LaToya Turner posted the fifth fastest mark in the 200m (24.73) and the fifth best in the 60m hurdles (8.52). Surprisingly, sophomore Kendal Willis, after running only two weeks and undergoing arthoscopic surgery on her knee, qualified in the 60m hurdles as well at 8.84. Says Heisler, "For Kendal (Willis) to make the finals is just great. We didn't expect to be back, but she said she could run and came through."
Also qualifying were Tia Trent and Tarviant Campbell in the 400m with respective times of 56.60 and 56.64. Jenna Lock qualified in the 600m (1:35.05) and Traci Knudsen ran a qualifying time of 4:59.59 in the mile.
"We couldn't have done much better today," says Heisler. "All of the kids ran well, ran hard, and competed. Hopefully we can inflict some damage tomorrow.
