Smoot, Neuenswander Garner Big Ten Accolades
March 7, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Big Ten announced the recipients of the Big Ten honors and individual awards for women's indoor track and field on Wednesday. Two Hoosiers were recognized. Junior Audrey Smoot was named First Team All-Big Ten after her first-place finish at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Saturday in the 600m run. Sophomore Vera Neuenswander received her second Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in two years.
Smoot recorded her first Big Ten Championship in the 600m run on Sunday. Her time of 1:31.59 is a career best and the second-fastest time in IU history. Smoot surpassed fellow junior Molly Beckwith in the IU record books. Smoot's previous career best, which had stood as the fourth fastest in IU history, was improved by .64 seconds.
Sophomore Vera Neuenswander posted a provisional qualifying height of 4.05m at the Big Ten Championships, good for fourth place. The mark qualifies Neuenswander for the NCAA Championships, where she competed as a freshman in 2007. This is the second sportsmanship award for Neuenswander.
The Hoosiers are in action this weekend at the Alex Wilson Invitational at the Loftus Center on Notre Dame's campus.
