Day One Indiana Relays
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--In the opening day of the second annual Indiana Relays, the weather held out and the Indiana track and field team put forth a solid overall effort in its first home meet of the outdoor season. After one full day of competition, the Hoosiers sit in second place with 75 points, behind Central Michigan who racked up 96 points. Army is in third with 72 points.
Sophomore Stacey Clausing was the lone female Hoosier to post a regional qualifying mark after she ran a personal best time of 54.58 in the 400m. Junior Larra Overton also turned in a personal best time, shaving 16 seconds off her previous personal best to capture the crown in the 1500m run with a time of 4:30.06. The women's 800m saw senior LaDonna Ray take second at 2:16.76, and freshman Nikki Peterson finish third at 2:17.32.
Freshman Zakiya Robinson made her outdoor debut with a second-place finish in the long jump. She reached a mark of 5.54m (18-02.25). Sophomore Lorian Price was right on her heels as she leaped a 5.48m (17-11.75, which put her in third overall. In addition, Price was also runner-up in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.64. Junior Jean Schaffer made her first appearance in the long jump of her career and came in eighth overall with a mark of 4.85m (15-11.00).
The 4x100m relay team consisting of Price, Ara Towns, Kyndal Carr and Robinson finished second behind Central Michigan with a time of 47.19.
Competition will resume tomorrow with the first event, the men's javelin set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
