IU Wraps Up Indiana Relays
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--The Indiana women's track and field team wrapped up action at the second annual Indiana Relays by taking a third-place finish with 110 points. Central Michigan finished first with 140 and Army came in second with 129 points.
Senior Ara Towns rebounded from several injuries during the indoor season to finish first in the 100m dash with a time of 12.05. Also capturing a first place finish was sophomore Stacey Clausing in the 200m. Clausing just barely missed the regional qualifying standard (23.96) after she crossed the finish line at 23.97.
"Like I said coming into the meet, I knew we had a bunch of injuries and we were also very young," said head coach Randy Heisler. "I would have liked to see us do a little better, but we worked with what we had and did the best we could. Hopefully we can get some of these athletes back and we can rebound for some of our upcoming meets."
The 4x400m relay team won their event as the combination of sophomore Michele Huber, junior LaDonna Ray, senior Charlene Maddox, and Clausing finished with a time of 3:50.06.
Three IU athletes competed in the javelin as junior Lindsey Heisler had the best IU finish with a toss of 30.54m (100-02.00). Beth Gibbs (30.01m/98-05.00) and Shelbie Rose (20.32m/66-08.00) finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Heisler and Gibbs also competed in the discus. Heisler finished seventh (29.13m (95-07.00)) while Gibbs finished eighth 25.63m (84-01.00).
The Hoosiers return to action on April 9, when they travel to Eugene, Ore., to take part in a quadrangular meet, the Pepsi Invite. Indiana will go up against Oregon, Missouri and Washington in a scored meet.
