Stechschulte Earns Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Hoosier track and field standout Abbie Stechschulte was named this week's Big Ten Women's Co-Field Athlete of the Week after winning the collegiate title in the heptathlon at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on April 2-3 in Austin.
Stechschulte completed the meet with a personal-best score of 5,661 points, the second-best point total in Indiana women's track and field history. Her score automatically qualified her for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 12-14 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Columbus Grove, Ohio, native opened the meet on Wednesday, April 2 with a personal-best time of 13.76 in the 100-meter dash to take third place in the event. Stechschulte went on to place seventh in the high jump (1.66m), sixth in the shot put (12.44m) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (25.12). In the first event of the day on Thursday, Stechschulte took fourth with a mark of 5.96 meters in the long jump. She used a toss of 35.52 meters to place seventh in the javelin, and finished third in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:17.57.
Stechschulte shares this week's honor with Minnesota's Ruby Radocaj. This is IU's first field honor since March 31, 2003.
