    Hoosiers Compete at Drake & Penn Relays, Boilermaker Invitational

    Bloomington, Ind. - Several student-athletes on the women’s track and field team traveled to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa over the weekend as competition was completed on Saturday, April 26. Leading IU at the Drake Relays was senior Kelly McKinney who finished in seventh place in the hammer throw with her mark of 171’00” (52.13m). Hoosier freshman Jean Schaffer finished in a three-way tie for 12th place with her mark of 5’05.25 (1.66m) in the high jump.

    While Schaffer and McKinney represented Indiana in Des Moines, other Hoosiers were at the Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Danielle Carruthers led all IU runners with a second place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.09. Carruthers narrowly missed the championship as Texas’ Nichole Denby also finished with a time of 13.09, taking the title in a photo finish.

    In the 100 meter dash, Rachelle Boone finished third with a time of 11.41. Also finishing third was the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Larra Overton, Stephanie Magley, Mindy Peterson and Audrey Giesler with a time of 8:52.39. Rounding out the championship finishers for IU was the fifth-place, 4 x 200 team of Rachelle Boone, Danielle Carruthers, Ara Towns and Chioma Ndubisi with a time of 1:34.43, a new season best.

    Also competing at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., Jennifer Cobbina took top honors in the long jump with a mark of 5.80m (19-00.50). In the 1500 meter run, Kelly Siefker took championship honors with a time of 4:38.22. In the same event, Jamie Higginbotham finished seventh with a time of 4:50.68.

    Jessica Veenstra finished seventh in the javelin throw, hitting a mark of 31.73m (104-01). Abigail Paul finished 14th in the same event, throwing 25.80m (84-08). Veenstra also finished seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.62, a new season best. In the 400 meter dash, Jessica Comfort placed third with a time of 58.24 while Jessica Cassell finished sixth with a time of 59.21. In the 100 meter dash, Cobbina finished in a two-way tie for sixth with a time of 12.39.

    In the 200 meter dash, Cassell and Comfort each placed in the top 20. Cassell placed 13th with a time of 26.19 while Comfort was 20th with a mark of 26.80.

    In the 800 meter run, Ashley Groth led three Hoosier competitors with a time of 2:15.49, a new best on the season, good for third place. Dena Florida placed 13th with a time of 2:24.37 and Jessica Veenstra rounded out the event for IU with a time of 2:31.94.

    The Hoosiers next travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to face the Purdue Boilermakers in a Big Ten matchup.
