BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana freshman track and field standout Vera Neuenswander has been named the IU Athlete of the Week ending April 29. The award is selected by the IUHOOSIERS.com staff.
Neuenswander cleared 3.95 meters in the pole vault at the historic Drake Relays on April 27, for the second-best mark all-time in the Indiana record book. Her sixth place finish also qualified her for the NCAA Mideast Regional meet, which will take place on May 25-26, in Columbia, Mo.
Other IU athletes who had standout performances during the week include Thomas Richter (men's tennis), Cecile Perton (women's tennis), Brooke Zimmerman (water polo), Jon Fixler (baseball), Anita Gahir (women's golf), Jorge Campillo (men's golf), rowing's second varsity four and Julia Hamilton (softball).
Jr. - Hildesheim, Germany - Gymnasium Josephinum
Richter upset 48th-ranked Brian Hung at No. 1 singles against Michigan at the Big Ten Championship on April 27. He and Dara McLoughlin were up, 7-6, on 8th-ranked Matko Maravic and Hung at No. 1 doubles before the match ended after the doubles point was decided.
Sr. - Briey, France - Louis Bertrand
Perton won two singles matches at the Big Ten Championship, plus helped Indiana win the doubles point against Minnesota on April 27. Against the Golden Gophers, Perton defeated Karina Chairelli, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5. Her and Sigrid Fischer won the doubles point with a win at No. 2, 8-2, to help give Indiana a 4-2 victory. Against Michigan, she defeated Elizabeth Exon for the second time this year, 6-1, 6-3.
Jr. - Calgary, Alberta, Canada - Riffel-Regina
Zimmerman scored seven goals for the Hoosiers at the CWPA Eastern Championship on April 28-29. She had a hat trick in IU's opening win over No. 4 seed Brown, including the winning goal with seven seconds left to play. She also had one assist in the 9-8 victory. Against No. 1 Hartwick in the semifinals, Zimmerman had one goal in the 15-7 loss, a five-meter penalty shot. In the third place game against No. 2 seed and rival Michigan, the Calgary, Alberta native got the scoring started just under two minutes into the first frame. She scored again on a direct shot with 2:31 left to play in the second period and then iced the win for IU on a five-meter penalty shot with 2:54 remaining in the game. For her play, Zimmerman earned first team All-CWPA Tournament honors.
1B/DH - JR - Riverwoods, Ill. - Deerfield
Fixler hit .375 for the week with 9 RBI in his five games. Fixler slugged .625 for the Hoosiers in their five games, driving in a pair of runs in IU's 3-1 victory on April 28, including his second home run of the season on a line-drive shot to center field. In the Hoosiers' April 29, 8-7 win, Fixler drove home four runs, two on a third inning double, his team-leading ninth of the season.
Fr. - Thornhill, Ontario - Northview Heights Secondary
Gahir tied for 15th place in her first Big Ten Championship as the Hoosiers finished in fifth place for the event on April 27-29. Gahir turned in rounds of 75-76-79-80 for her placement, leading the team throughout the tournament. It was her third top-15 finish of the season and her first of the spring.
So. - Caceres, Spain - La Asuncion
Campillo rebounded from a first-round 78 with rounds of 72, 75 and 76 to finish in a tie for 12th place with a total of 301 at the Big Ten Championship on April 27-29. The sophomore was the lone Hoosier to finish in the top-15 at the event. As a team, the Hoosiers finished in a tie for sixth place. It was his ninth top-15 placement of the season and the third of the spring.

Stephanie Lindeman (Fr. - LaPorte, Ind. - LaPorte), Stephanie Hamilton (So. - Franklin, Mich. - Detroit Country Day), Marla Alexander (Jr. - Huntington, Ind. - North), Stephanie Horvath (So. - South Bend, Ind. - Saint Joseph's), Laura Fuhrmann (So. - Decatur, Ind. - Bellmont)
Lindeman (cox), Hamilton (stroke), Alexander, Horvath and Fuhrmann (bow) won Indiana's first-ever varsity medal at the Big Ten Championships, taking third place in the grand final of the second varsity four on April 28. The crew took second in its morning heat to earn a spot in the grand final.
Jr. - LF - Lincolnshire, Ill. - Stevenson
Hamilton hit .455 in four games last week, going 5-for-11 with a triple and a run scored. Hamilton accumulated seven total bases in her four games, leading the team with a .636 slugging percentage on the week. She also had a team-best on-base percentage of .500 and went 1-for-2 in stolen base attempts. With her swipe of second base against Penn State on April 27, Hamilton matched her career high with her 17th stolen base of the season.
