    Neuenswander Named IU Athlete of the Week

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana freshman track and field standout Vera Neuenswander has been named the IU Athlete of the Week ending May 6. The award is selected by the IUHOOSIERS.com staff and is her second straight honor.

    Neuenswander cleared 4.12 meters to break the Indiana pole vault record at the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, on Friday, May 4. Her clearance also improved her regional qualifying mark and currently ranks seventh in the nation.

    Prior to Neuenswander's mark, Emily Tharpe set the IU pole vault record of 3.96 meters during the 2002 season.

    Neuenswander is one of seven Hoosiers that have qualified for the 2007 NCAA Mideast Regional Championship, which will be held in Columbia, Mo., on the campus of the University of Missouri on May 25-26.

    Other IU athletes who had standout performances during the week include freshman Jason Ferrell (baseball) and the IU men's 4x100-meter relay team (Marcus Thigpen, Keith Heerdegen, Jacob Moylan and Kiwan Lawson).

    Ferrell shut down one of the top offensive teams in the nation, throwing 6 1/3 strong innings in Indiana's game against Iowa on Friday, May 4. The freshman allowed five hits and one walk, striking out one Hawkeyes, earning a no-decision in the contest. Iowa entered the weekend seventh in the nation with their .338 team average. Ferrell is 3-3 with a 5.77 ERA this season.

    The men's 4x100-meter relay team, made up of juniors Marcus Thigpen, Keith Heerdegen and Jacob Moylan, and senior Kiwan Lawson, ran a 40.51 for the event title and an NCAA Mideast Regional qualification at the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington on Friday, May 4.
