May 11, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kind Butler and Jordan Gray are the Big Ten Track Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday, May 11. Both Hoosiers collect the honors for the first time in their careers after posting some of the Big Ten's top marks on this season at the Billy Hayes Invitational.
Indiana track and field director and head coach Ron Helmer said he likes what he sees from Butler and Gray heading into the Big Ten Championships this weekend.
"Jordan and Kind both ran lifetime bests this weekend," Helmer said. "That is all you can hope for heading into the postseason is to have your student-athletes at their best."
Butler was the collegiate winner in the 100m and 200m dashes, posting times that put him right in the thick of things heading into the Big Ten Championships. In the 100, he clocked a time of 10.35 seconds, which leads the Big Ten and is tied for the second best in IU history. In the 200, he clocked a 21.07, which is a .15 second PR and ranks fourth in the Big Ten this season.
Jordan Gray won the women's collegiate title in the 800, finishing in 2:07.00. The time is 10th in the IU records and third in the Big Ten this season. Gray also ran the third leg of the 4x400m relay, helping IU to the win in 3:41.84. With Gray in the relay, the Hoosiers have won five straight this outdoor season in the 4x400m relay.
Next on the schedule for the Hoosiers are the Big Ten Championships on May 13-15 in Iowa City, Iowa. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
