Senior Jessica Gall is currently in Sacramento, Calif., with teammates Lorian Price, Vera Neuenswander and Blayne Burkholder to compete in the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The following journal entry is the second of Gall's trip at her final national meet as a Hoosier.
Journal Entry No. 2
Wednesday started off with an easy day-before-the-big-race run and the
breakfast buffet at the hotel. After breakfast we sat around and watched TV before heading to a Sports Authority store so Coach Wilson could buy a new watch. On these trips it is important not to do too much walking or standing around because it wears out your legs quicker than you think, so that is why we spend a lot of time doing nothing! Even though we are in sunny California, it is not a vacation because we are here for serious business - to run fast (and for the vaulters, jump high)! We grabbed some lunch at Panera then headed to the track to watch the pole vault. Vera kept us on the edge of our seats by waiting until her third and final attempt to clear each of her three heights and make it through to finals on Friday. During each of Vera's jumps I called her mom to give her the play-by-play, who then called all of Vera's siblings, so the Neuenswander family was fully informed, and very excited, about Vera's success! We then watched Lo (Price) run her best time ever to make it to the semi-finals of the hurdles. Per tradition, we went to Olive Garden for a pre-race pasta meal, then came back to the track to watch Lo run her semi-final heat and found out that Blayne too made it to the finals in the men's pole vault.
All in all, it was a good day for IU track and it motivated me to carry the torch and do well in my 10K race on Thursday. I'm ready to rock and roll for 25 laps!
