NCAA Diaries - Jessica Gall
June 8, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana track and field team is competing at the 2006 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 7-10. The Hoosiers will take time out of their incredibly busy schedule to talk to IUHOOSIERS.com. Jessica Gall, who will run the 10,000m on Thursday night, talked about her first sew days in sunny Sacramento.
Last night I watched my teammate Kelly Siefker run the best steeplechase race of her life and it was very inspiring! She was strong at the finish and ran smartly by not going out too hard, both things I hope to do tonight. I can't wait to have my turn to compete this evening! We had two other guys advance to the finals in their respective events, Wil in the hammer throw and David in the 400m, so that is also great inspiration to do well and represent Indiana amongst the top athletes in the nation.
Larra Overton, my usual roommate on track trips, and I did a little shake-out jog this morning and then got breakfast at the hotel while watching our traditional morning line-up of Good Morning America, Regis and Kelly, and then The View.
A bunch of other track athletes are staying at our hotel and the lobby is currently packed with track junkies such as myself on their laptops looking at results and heat sheets. The weather is pretty toasty here, over 90 degrees every day, but it does not feel that bad because the humidity is very low. To help deal with the heat the men's distance coach, Dr. Chapman, made a little "ice vest" by dismantling a life-jacket and inserting ziplock baggies with ice in them where the foam used to be. We put it on to cool us down after we warm-up but before we start our race. Kelly wore it last night and it must've worked so those of us distance runners who are competing tonight are going to use it also. Yesterday people from other schools kept asking Kelly what she was wearing so we are definitely setting a new trend in the track fashion world!
The atmosphere at this meet is electrifying with the best of the best giving it their all. It is truly a special thing to witness, and I am so grateful to have an opportunity to be a part of it as well.
Later today I'll get some Subway for lunch, chill out in the room, head over to the track and listen to some pump-up songs on my iPod before it is time to rock and roll on the track! Go Hoosiers!
