BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As if garnering All-America honors for the second time this year wasn’t enough with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Friday that Indiana junior pole vaulter Vera Neuenswander has been named a third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American. The social studies education major boasts a 3.974 GPA.

“Vera is very deserving, and she is exactly the success story that we want to represent our program,” said Indiana track and field director and head coach Ron Helmer. “An NCAA runner-up that is also being recognized for her success in the classroom, that is the story we want tell about our athletes.”

Neuenswander became the first indoor and outdoor All-American pole vaulter for the IU women's program, and she did it in style as the NCAA runner-up at the outdoor meet. Neuenswander was perfect through her first four jumps, clearing 4.00m (13-1.5), 4.10m (13-5.25), 4.20m (13-9.25) and 4.30m (14-1.25) at NCAA’s. The only jumper with zero misses, she began her attempts at 4.40m (14-5.25) with the lead, and it proved valuable as it garnered her second place. She is the highest finisher for IU since Irina Kharun won a national title in the javelin in 2003. The 4.30m clearance is the second best jump in school history, behind only her own career mark, which she recorded at the NCAA Mideast Regional.

Next up for Indiana are the U.S. Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., which are June 24-28. For all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
