Three Hoosiers Fall Short at NCAAs
June 8, 2005
SACRAMENTO, Calif.-- The cold and rainy weather put a bit of a damper on the opening day of the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex, but it did not stop Aarik Wilson (long jump) and Stephen Haas (5,000m) from advancing in their respective events.
On the women's side, junior Kelly Siefker's personal-best 10:18.59 in the 3,000m steeplechase would not be enough to advance her to the next round. Her 16th-place finish overall was just two spots shy of making the cut. Siefker's heat went out at a very brisk pace and the Dayton, Ohio, native managed to keep a steady eighth-place stance throughout the event. Her time is the second-best in school history.
Sophomore hurdler Lorian Price and sophomore sprinter Stacey Clausing both put forth a solid effort in a strong field of competitors in the first round of the 100m hurdles, and 400m, respectively on the wet track. Price finished 25th overall with a time of 13.97, while Clausing took 28th in 54.96.
Wilson was the first Hoosier to get through, and he did so in a dramatic fashion. After fouling his first two attempts, Wilson made spectators sweat as they watched the qualifying round of the long jump. Even though it was uncharacteristic of Wilson, the NCAA indoor long and triple jump champion stayed poised and confident heading into his last jump and managed to earn a mark of 7.61m (24-11.75) to put him in third overall and make him eligible for tomorrow's final.
The final event of the night saw Haas run a solid 5,000m. The junior indoor All-American was the early leader in the second heat and maintained his lead through majority of the race. At the 2k mark, Haas led the pack with a 5:41.93 split. Around the 4k point, Haas trailed off into sixth but managed to stay within reach of making the final. His time of 13:58.37 put him 13th overall.
Senior decathlete Jake Wiseman completed four of the ten events of the decathlon during Wednesday's action. In the first event, Wiseman took an 18th-place finish in the 100m with a time of 11.68. He then followed with a 20th-place finish in the long jump (6.49m/21-03.50), and a ninth-place finish in the shot put (13.44m/44-01.25). After no-heighting in the high jump, Wiseman did not compete in the final event of the day, the 400m and withdrew from the competition.
2005 Big Ten 3,000m Steeplechase champion, Tom Burns struggled in his signature event and gutted out a 27th-place finish overall. Burns was at the end of the pack through the first 800m, and then nudged his way up to 12th-place, but this is as close as he would get the rest of the way, as he fell off towards the end to finish with a time of 9:03.02.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will resume tomorrow with the first event, the decathlon 110m hurdles set for 11:15 a.m.
