November 4, 1999 INDIANA PREPARES FOR NCAA GREAT LAKES REGIONAL
Indiana is coming off a fifth place finish at the Big Ten Championships last Saturday at Penn State. Freshman Amanda Bell finished first for the Hoosiers and sixth overall in the race with a time of 17:30.6.
IU is now preparing for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. This meet is crucial for the Hoosiers. In order to compete in the NCAA Championships on November 22 in Bloomington, the women need to finish in first or second place or receive one of the thirteen at-large bids.
IU Women's Notes: Freshman Amanda Bell had the best time of her season and now holds the top time in the 5K for IU this season. Bell also finished first for IU for the sixth time this season. In addition, senior Monica Hostetler, freshman Allyson Hammond, senior Kim Craig, senior Megan Leah, sophomore Erin Womble, junior Courtney Bell, sophomore Stephanie Magley and sophomore Suzzane Botkin all ran their best times of the season in the 5K.
Next Competition: The Hoosiers will be competing in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on November 13 in Terre Haute, IN.
Quoting Women's Head Coach Judy Bogenschutz: " I thought that the Big Ten Championships were a big improvement from last year. We went from ninth place last year to fifth place this year. Some of the girls have never run in that kind of race before so it was new to them. For instance, Amanda Bell is a freshman so this is new to her and senior Monica Hostetler is coming to IU from Division III. Overall, I was impressed with the runners. Where we are in the season now is much better than where we stood last year at this time. In the region last year we were ranked 20th. Currently, we are ranked fifth. We have a legitimate shot to qualify at the National meet."
