BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana University volleyball team improved to 6-0 and captured their second tournament title of the season Saturday night, topping North Carolina State (5-1) in three sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-20). The Indiana trio of Ashley Benson, Caitlin Cox and Jordan Haverly were each named to the all-tournament team for the second consecutive weekend with Benson snagging MVP laurels in both invitationals.
"We had our ups and downs in the tournament, but in the end it's all about winning," said Head Coach Sherry Dunbar. "We came together in each match to find a way."
Benson hit .548 (39-5-62) for the weekend while averaging 1.91 blocks per set. Haverly followed closely with 36 kills, to go along with her team-best nine aces during the three-match stretch. Cox roamed the defensive backcourt, digging 4.55 balls per set for a weekend total of 50.
In the championship match, Benson and Haverly combined for 20 kills and a .375 hitting efficiency. Cox concluded her all-tournament-worthy weekend with a match-high 11 digs against the Wolfpack. As a team, the Hoosiers more than doubled up NC State in the blocks category, 13-6. Senior captain Taylor Wittmer was a beast at the net, racking up seven blocks. Benson also made an impact with her six stuffs, two of the solo variety.
The opening set was the tightest of all as North Carolina State led as late as 20-19. Sophomore Kelci Marschall led the IU turnaround, however, netting two kills and a block down the stretch in the 25-23 Hoosier triumph. Sets two and three were not as close with just three combined lead changes as IU rolled to the tournament crown-clinching winner.
The Cream and Crimson hit the road next week, heading to New York for a tournament co-hosted by Niagara University and Canisius Colloge. Indiana will play four contests out in Buffalo, taking on Robert Morris, Colgate, Niagara and Bucknell.
