BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team defeated UT-Chattanooga, 3-0, to open play at the IU Credit Union Invitational. With the win, the Hoosiers are now 7-3 on the season.
"I am pleased that we won in three games," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "I am looking forward to tomorrow's competition."
In the first game of the match, the Mocs out-hit the Hoosiers, .216 to .196. However, Indiana captured the game, 30-27, on the strength of six kills from Erica Short and four more by Juli Pierce.
The second frame was all Hoosiers, as Indiana captured teh game, 30-20, to take the 2-0 lead. Short again led IU with four kills and Caitlin Watts added two service aces in the game for the Hoosiers.
Indiana closed out the match with a 30-25 victory in the third and final game. For the match, Short led the Hoosiers with 18 kills. She also picked up seven digs. Lauren Ditteon notched eight kills for IU and Watts had three service aces.
"Once we get into the Big Ten season, being more balanced on the attack will make us a more threatening team," said Ditteon. "This is a good building block for us entering Big Ten play."
The Hoosiers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 when they host Mercer and SMU on the final day of the IU Credit Union Invitational. IU will take on Mercer at 12:30 p.m. and SMU at 7 p.m. at University Gym.
