IU Falls to #9 Minnesota
Oct. 7, 2005
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana volleyball team dropped to 8-9 (1-4 Big Ten) on the season after battling No. 9 Minnesota through three games. The Hoosiers could not overcome the Golden Gophers, as IU fell 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-24).
"We competed with the No.9-ranked team in the nation tonight," Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller said. "That is the frustrating part. We aren't happy, because we could finish when we had them. That can be fixed though. Minnesota is a good team."
Individually, senior outside hitter Rachel Gerling led IU with 11 kills, while freshman middle blocker Erica Short notched 10 of her own. Freshman setter Laura Holm recorded 33 assists, while freshman defensive specialist Hana Ros registered 11 digs.
"Hana really stepped it up for us tonight," Weismiller said. "We did a much better job of digging the ball tonight."
The first frame belonged to Minnesota, as the ninth-ranked team in the country won 30-23 without allowing IU to tie the game.
The second stanza proved to be much more competitive featuring 19 ties and 10 lead changes. The Hoosiers held a 26-24 advantage, but could not withstand a 6-0 run by Minnesota in a 30-26 loss to fall behind 2-0.
Indiana jumped out to a 10-8 lead in the third game, but fortune shined on the Golden Gophers with an unscheduled timeout as the power went out across the campus. After a 10-minute delay, Minnesota responded to win 30-24 in a game with nine ties and three lead changes.
Next up, Indiana plays host to Iowa tomorrow at 7 p.m., in the University Gym in Bloomington, Ind.
