BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Indiana Volleyball (9-12, 1-8) defeated No. 17 Purdue (14-6, 5-4) in four sets (25-22, 25-23, 15-25, 25-21). The win is the first for IU over Purdue since 2009 and the first over a ranked opponent since taking down Tennessee in the NCAA tournament in 2010.
Indiana got 15 kills from Jordan Haverly and 11 from Morgan Leach in the match. Samantha Thrower had eight blocks and seven kills, and Caitlin Hansen had a career-high 22 digs.
The first set was back and forth to a 10-10 tie when IU started to take control. The Hoosiers went on a 10-4 run and held onto the lead the rest of the way to take the set 25-22. IU got four kills from Leach in the set, and Hansen added six digs.
The second set proved to be a similar story, as IU turned a 9-9 tie into a 20-13 lead. Purdue again battled back, but IU held on for a 25-23 win. The Hoosiers got five kills each from Jordan Haverly and Amelia Anderson in the set, as well as three blocks from Thrower. Indiana had match highs with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .214.
Purdue came out of the locker room for the third set and took control, taking the set 25-15. Indiana got six digs from Hansen in the set. The Hoosiers had only seven kills in the set.
The fourth set was a battle from the start, as neither team led by more than two after a 3-0 IU start until IU went on a run that started at an 18-18 tie. IU rattled off three straight and then battled to the end, taking the win 25-21 on a block from Thrower and Kelci Marschall. Thrower had three blocks in the set to go along with three kills. Haverly had four kills and three aces in the frame.
