Indiana Volleyball (8-15, 0-11) fell in four sets to Michigan State (17-6, 6-5) in five sets (19-25, 25-21, 15-25, 22-25). IU was led by Kristen Seaton and Samantha Thrower in the match, who both added 10 kills. Caitlin Cox added 11 digs and three service aces, and Whitney Granado had 34 assists, seven digs, three aces and three blocks.
The Spartans came out firing on all cylinders, taking the first set 25-19. The Big Ten leaders in hitting percentage, Michigan State hit .387 in the first set, led by Jenilee Rathje and Alexis Mathews who combined for 11 kills on 13 swings.
In the second, IU's defense proved to be the story, as IU held the Spartans to .000 hitting on 33 swings. IU had five blocks in the set and doubled their digs output from six in the first set to 12 in the second. IU got three blocks from Granado and two from Morgan Leach and Ivie Obeime.
In the third, Rathje and Mathews got back on track, and so did the Spartans. MSU hit .591, led by five kills from Rathje and two kills on two swings from Mathews. Thrower added five kills for the Hoosiers in the set.
The fourth set saw the Hoosiers lead by five at 15-10, but the Spartans came roaring back, tying it at 15-15 and going on to win the set 25-22.
