IU Downed by No. 3 Penn State
Nov. 4, 2005
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana volleyball team dropped to 9-16 (2-11 Big Ten) on the season after running into a red-hot No. 3 Penn State on Nov. 4 at the University Gym in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers wound up falling to the Nittany Lions by a margin of 3-0 (30-19, 30-16, 30-13).
"Penn State is just a great team," Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller said. "They have the chance to be national champions. We have a young team and need to learn from this match. We competed and the scores are not indicative of the effort we gave."
Individually, senior outside hitter Rachel Gerling paced IU with 12 kills, while freshman setters Laura Holm (15) and Jessica Batliner (13) each posted double-digit assist efforts. Additionally, junior libero Sara Diehl recorded 11 digs.
"The key to Penn State is that they limit their unforced errors," Weismiller said. "We struggled with some of the strings of points they put together. Something else about Penn State is that when they get out of system, they keep the ball in play. Hopefully, that is something we can take and be able to duplicate. Our passing was good tonight, we just could not terminate. I will take this lineup any day."
The first frame proved to be the most competitive as the Hoosiers hung tough with Penn State cutting PSU's lead to 19-18 at one point. The Nittany Lions, however, closed out the game to win 30-19 and take a 1-0 lead.
Penn State came out hot in the second stanza to win 30-16 in a game in which the Nittany Lions never trailed. The win gave PSU a 2-0 lead.
The Nittany Lions then closed the door on the match with a 30-13 victory.
Next up, the Hoosiers host No. 19 Ohio State on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the University Gym in Bloomington, Ind.
