Comeback Hoosiers Win in Five on Senior Night
Nov. 12, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Volleyball (9-19, 1-15) dug itself out of an 0-2 hole to storm back for a 3-2 win over Iowa (11-17, 1-15) on senior night. The Hawkeyes won the opening two sets 25-21, 25-18, but the Hoosiers came out of the locker room after the break with a purpose, winning 25-18, 25-20 and 15-9. IU had four players with double-digit kills, and got a total team effort in completing a five-set comeback. Seniors Mary Chaudoin, Caitlin Cox, Lindsay Enterline and Kristen Seaton were honored after the match.
Head Coach Sherry Dunbar said that the team played for the seniors on senior night, but they were motivated by the desire to win first and foremost.
"I think that they play with so much heart, each and every night," said Dunbar. "I think of course they wanted to play hard for the seniors, but I think more importantly they just wanted to find a win. I think that was what it was all about. Coming out and attacking Iowa and just being the aggressor. It couldn't have been more perfect because we've fought all season, so to come back from down 0-2, and to fight to come back to win in five was really the perfect emphasis of what we've been talking about all year."
Kelci Marschall jump-started the struggling Hoosiers' offense, killing seven balls in the third set and tallying 14 of her 18 kills in the final three sets. Samantha Thrower was equally as crucial to IU's success in the final three, tallying 11 of her 14 kills and six of her career-high eight blocks in the three sets that IU won. Cox tallied a career high 28 digs and added seven assists. Seventeen of Cox's 28 digs game in the final three sets.
Seaton had 12 kills and three blocks. Chaudoin talled 11 assists and two blocks, and Enterline had four kills, four digs and a block. Freshman Morgan Leach had 12 kills, and Whitney Granado had 41 assists and 16 digs. Completing the Hoosiers stat leaders, Melanie Hicks added 10 digs.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, Nov. 18, when they visit Penn State. For complete coverage of all things IU volleyball, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
