May 5, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team has announced its 2014 schedule and will celebrate its 40th season in program history this fall. The 2014 campaign features a 32-match slate including contests against teams from 10 different conferences: America East, American Athletic, Atlantic 10, Big Ten (13), Horizon, Mid-American (2), Northeast, Ohio Valley (2), SEC and Summit League. The Hoosiers will also take on seven squads that finished in the Top 25 last season as well as 10 teams that participated in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
“We are very excited to celebrate the 40th season of volleyball at Indiana and understand the privilege of coaching and playing at such a prestigious institution," said head coach Sherry Dunbar. "We will attempt to honor and bring back as many alumni as we can, because this is their program as well as ours and we understand the sacrifices they made during their time here.
I am pleased with the balance of our schedule this coming year. We will again host two tournaments in the pre-season along with traveling a short distance up north to compete against IUPUI, so our fans can see a lot of action early. The Big Ten will be noticeably different adding Rutgers and Maryland and playing a sort of hybrid schedule with more mid-week matches towards the end of the season. It should be a lot of fun and we can’t wait to get started.”
The Cream and Crimson open 2014 with a three-game slate in Storrs, Conn. at the UConn Classic, August 29-30. Indiana’s lifts the lid on 2014 with America East Tournament Champion and NCAA Tournament participant New Hampshire before closing the weekend with Central Connecticut State and host UConn.
Indiana kicks off its 16-game home schedule when its returns to Bloomington for its first of two home tournaments this fall at the Indiana Invitational, September 5-6. The weekend lineup features matches against Miami (Ohio), Southeast Missouri and Mississippi State at the University Gym.
The Hoosiers will continue action at the University of Illinois-Chicago Invitational for a pair of matches in Chicago, Ill. on Friday, September 12. IU and UIC take the court for an 11 a.m. tilt before the Hoosiers close the day with Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. ET.
Indiana will play a midweek matchup at IUPUI Wednesday, September 17 before heading back to Bloomington for the Hoosiers’ second invite of the year. University Gym will set the stage for the 2014 Hoosier Classic September 19-20,, which welcomes squads from Buffalo, Western Illinois and Butler.
Indiana will then enter play in arguably one of the toughest volleyball conferences in the country. The Big Ten sent a conference record-tying eight teams to the NCAA Championship in 2013, with five earning top-16 seeds including eventual national champion, Penn State. The B1G also welcomes new members Maryland and Rutgers to the mix to create a 14-member conference in 2014.
Big Ten action opens in Bloomington with Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 26 and continues through Friday, Nov. 8. During that stretch, the Hoosiers will host 10 B1G matches in U-Gym with several special events planned for a number of matches, including the Camper Reunion (Sept. 27 vs. Michigan), Alumni Reunion (Oct. 11 vs. Purdue), Hoosier Hitters Day (Oct. 18 vs. Penn State and Nov. 1 vs. Wisconsin), Dig Pink (Oct. 29 vs. Minnesota), and Senior Night (Nov. 22 vs. Illinois).
The 2014 NCAA Tournament will kickoff with the first round at campus sites December 4-5 and progress into the round of 32 on Dec. 6-7. The Sweet 16 is set for Dec. 12 before advancing to the Elite 8 on Dec. 13. The Final Four this season will be held in Oklahoma City, Okla., Dec. 18-20.
