Volleyball Announces 2013 Schedule
May 6, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Volleyball coach Sherry Dunbar has announced the 2013 schedule for her Hoosiers, and it includes 16 home matches at University Gym. Season tickets and Red Zone seating are now for sale via the IU Athletics Ticket Office at 1-866-IUSPORTS.
The Hoosiers play 14 matches against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams this season, and Dunbar says the while team has prepared to get back to the NCAA Tournament, this schedule gives the program the chance to do just that.
"This schedule will be challenging for us playing 14 matches against nine NCAA Tournament teams," said Dunbar. "I do believe we are up to that challenge. We have prepared all spring for this schedule and for making our run back to the NCAA Tournament. To do that, you need to play the best teams."
"I love the ACC/Big Ten Challenge we are participating in with Illinois. Getting a chance to compete against two of the top teams in the ACC right before starting Big Ten Conference play will really show us where we are at that point. It will be great to host Rutgers who will be joining the Big Ten in 2014 to start the year, and I am also very excited to take our team back to The College of Charleston where I coached for four years. They are a quality program and a perennial NCAA participant and it's a beautiful place for our players to experience."
"The Red Zone is a unique experience that we provide to our most passionate fans to give us the best home court advantage in the Big Ten. We feel honored to have so many great supporters and promise that our program will always represent Indiana University to the best of our ability and give you something to get excited about. Let's fill the Red Zone every match and make it very difficult to come into U-Gym - IT'S OUR HOUSE!"
The Hoosiers open the season at home with the Indiana Invitational. IU hosts Robert Morris, Rutgers and Kent State. Rutgers will get its first taste of Big Ten Volleyball when it plays the Hoosiers on August 31. The two schools have met on the volleyball court just once before, as IU swept the Scarlet Knights in 1980.
Indiana's first road trip of the season is a return to The College of Charleston for Sherry Dunbar, who coached the Cougars for four years before taking over at IU. The Hoosiers will play South Carolina State, Coastal Carolina and The College over two days in the Palmetto State. Charleston was a first round NCAA Tournament victor a year go, knocking off a Miami team that included 2013 IU transfer Awele Nwaeze.
The Hoosiers host the Hoosier Classic on the weekend of September 13-14, with Wyoming, Tennessee State and Alabama-Birmingham coming to town. Indiana will match up with UAB for the first time since 2010, when IU swept the Blazers in preseason competition.
Next on the schedule is a trip to the other Carolina for dates at Duke and North Carolina in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Hoosiers and Illinois will both play the two ACC foes, fighting for conference bragging rights. North Carolina won their first round match in the NCAA tournament a year ago and should be a big test for the Hoosiers.
Big Ten play opens for the Hoosiers on the following Wednesday, as the Golden Gophers welcome IU into the Sports Pavilion, fresh off a 2012 run to the Elite Eight. Indiana then visits Wisconsin, looking to repeat their 2012 victory at the Wisconsin Field House.
The Big Ten home opener sees Penn State come to town on October 4, and the Ohio State Buckeyes are in town the next evening. Both opponents were in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, with PSU advancing to the Final Four.
Northwestern and Illinois come to town the next weekend. IU won at Northwestern a year ago and put a scare into the Illini in Champaign as well.
A trip to Nebraska's new digs in the Devaney Center is next on the schedule, and then the Hoosiers look to repeat their 2012 win at Iowa the next day. IU continues the road stint with a Tues., Oct. 22 match at Purdue, followed by a Saturday match at Michigan.
The Hoosiers then return home to host Wisconsin and Minnesota, followed by road rematches with Ohio State, Penn State, Illinois and Northwestern.
The Hoosiers close the regular season with four straight at home, hosting Iowa and Nebraska, and then the Boilermakers for Senior Night on Wed., Nov. 27. The regular season finale sees Michigan visit U-Gym on Fri., Nov. 29.
