IU Volleyball Summer Update
July 3, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The IU volleyball team has been hard at work getting ready for the 2014 season, which gets underway Aug. 29 against Central Connecticut at the UConn Classic. The Hoosiers first home match will be Sept. 5 against Miami (Oh) to open play in the Indiana Invitational tournament the Hoosiers are hosting.
Junior Awele Nwaeze shared some thoughts on how the workouts and team bulding activities have been going this summer.
On training with the team this summer
"It has been hard, but I feel like we have improved a lot over the time. I feel like we are making a lot of strides and are coming together as a team. We have been working in the weight room and playing as much as we can to get better. We have also been doing a lot of team building and activities to focus on what we need to do to improve as a team. We are all very talented volleyball players and are working to find that unity and leadership among us, so we can be successful."
On some of the other activities the team has been doing outside of workouts
"Class, working out, playing and studying has taken up a lot of my time. I'm pre-med so i have a lot of classes i have to take. I did yoga at the Student Recreational Sport Center (SRSC), which was fun. Some people have gone kayaking and rock climbing."
On team building exercises with Mike Ogden of Pinnacle Leadership
"We went in the woods and did some different activities. One of the activities we were blindfolded and had to have people lead us. We did another activity where we had to get rocks up a hill, which was timed. A lot of it was figuring out how we best respond to each other and having the humility to accept criticism from someone who is in charge of you and then the respect to follow your leader and listen. I feel like it was very productive and opened up a platform for us to discuss ways to better ourselves for the team."
Next week the Hoosiers host an elite camp, all-skills camp and team camp. Registration is still open as well for the Little Hoosiers Volley-School for first-fourth graders. For more information on all the IU volleyball camps click here.
