ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 15 Indiana water polo team started their season off right Saturday morning with a 17-9 victory over Iona at the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich. Five newcomers debuted their talents by playing their first game as Hoosiers.

Eight different players scored in Indiana's decisive win with five scoring in double figures. University of Maryland transfer Allison Campbell paved the way for the Hoosiers by scoring four goals in her first match on an Indian roster. Campbell's career high at Maryland was five goals, which she matched on four different occasions.

Senior attacker Shae Fournier added three goals to the Hoosiers' total. She is currently fourth on Indiana's all-time scoring list with 223 career goals. She only needs two more to pass Krista Peterson who is third with 224. Her one steal in the match bumped Fournier up to third on the career steals list with 233. She passed Molly Fonner who is now sitting in third with 232.

Sophomore center Candyce Schroeder muscled her way into the net for IU's first goal of the 2014 season. She was followed up almost immediately with goals from Fournier, Rebecca Gerrity, and Erin Pannek.

The Iona Gales were stunted offensively for most of the opening quarter, but were able to take advantage of a 6-on-5 opportunity to put a point on the board, ending the first quarter with the Hoosiers in the lead 4-1.

Shae Fournier was awarded a penalty shot to start the second quarter. Her shot hit the goalpost, but she grabbed her own rebound and put it in for the score. Iona was able to convert two more power-play opportunities into goals, but the Hoosiers strong offensive attack never allowed them to get close. Two goals from Campbell, as well as one from Shelby Taylor, freshman Ellie Stott, and Erin Pannek gave Indiana a 10-3 lead at the half.

Iona's goalie opened the third quarter with two impressive saves, but junior Summer Creighton was everywhere in the pool, finding all sorts of opportunities for her teammates with three steals and two big assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault finished the match with nine saves on 24 shot attempts. She also recorded two steals for the Hoosiers. Indiana will play host Michigan at 6:00 pm EST.
