ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
The No. 14 Indiana water polo team (0-1) lost a close match to No. 9 San Jose State 12-10 in their opening match of the season at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Hoosiers were not able to convert on offense during most of the first two quarters, and their 7-4 deficit at the half was just too much to overcome despite a second half surge.
Jackie Kohli's first game back in over a year after recovering from shoulder surgery, resulted in four goals and multiple big plays on defense. She has now moved up to fourth on the career goals scored list at Indiana, surpassing Nicole Redder with 184. She needs 23 more before she moves into third place currently held by Brooke Zimmerman.
The Hoosiers leading scorer from last year, Shea Fournier, had three goals for Indiana while Rebecca Gerrity, and Colleen McNaught, had one apiece.
Freshman Candyce Schroeder scored her first colligate goal in the fourth quarter after being named just one of two freshman starters for Indiana.
Freshman Jessica Gaudreault got the start in goal for IU and recorded seven saves.
Indiana had nine power plays on offense during the first half but weren't able to capitalize, getting only one goal during that time.
She Fournier was able to score three goals in the third and the Hoosiers we able to tie up the score at nine, keeping it close the rest of the match. However a few late turnovers gave San Jose State (1-0) the break they needed as they scored a late goal off a steal to win the game 12-10.
Indiana will face Colorado State at 4:00 pm EST.
