ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
It wasn't as if the No. 14 Indiana water polo team (1-2) didn't have plenty of opportunities to score the ball, but try as they might, the Hoosiers just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net en route to a 11-5 loss against No. 7 San Diego State. The Hoosiers had 34 shot attempts but only 5 goals in the Canham Natatorium on Saturday.
(Year) Rebecca Taylor was the most active for the Hoosiers across the stat sheet. She had one goal, one assist, three steals, and a field block.
It was a low scoring match in the beginning, with the Hoosiers optimizing their time on offense. Though San Diego State spent much time on defense in the first quarter, they were able to be productive with what little opportunities they had, as they ended the first quarter with a 4-2 lead. Unfortunately for Indiana, it would take three more quarters before the Hoosiers scored again.
Jessica Gaudreault got the start in goal and chalked up three saves before freshman Mary Campbell took over at half time with a 6-2 San Diego State lead. Campbell had three saves for Indiana.
Jakie Kohli scored the initial goal for the Hoosiers and was able to finish the game with two. Summer Creighton also had a goal in the first half. Both Rebecca Gerrity and Shae Fournier had one goal apiece in the fourth quarter, Fournier's coming off a penalty shot.
San Diego State made 13 saves in the game.
The Hoosiers will face their toughest test yet at 2:45 pm EST when they go up against No. 3 UCLA Bruins (2-0).
