No. 14 Indiana Plays Fantastic First Half, but Comes Up Short Against No. 3 UCLA
Jan. 20, 2013
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - No. 14 Indiana water polo (1-3) played their best match of the tournament against No. 3 UCLA (3-0), but couldn't quite pull off the upset at the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich., losing 8-4.
The Hoosiers had a strong first half fueled by their defense. Freshman Jessica Gaudreault owned the goal for Indiana, with five big time saves in the first half alone, and eight over all.
The Hoosiers were able to maximize offensive opportunities early. Redshirt senior Jakie Kohli scored two quick goals, both off power plays. Rookie Candyce Schroeder had a first half goal as well, and Shelby Taylor scored one in the fourth.
Indiana's defense was stifling out of the goal during the first half as well, and the Hoosiers ended the half tied at 3 against the high-scoring Bruins.
Things picked back up for UCLA during the third and they were able to put two un-matched goals on IU. The Bruins sealed the deal adding three early goals in the fourth quarter and were able to avoid the upset to the lower-ranked Hoosiers.
That was the final game for Indiana in the Michigan Kick-Off. The Hoosiers will travel to Davis, Calif. on Feb. 1, and then head down to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the Stanford Invitational on Feb. 2 and 3.
