Physical Battle Ends in No. 14 Indiana's Favor as Hoosiers Upset No. 12 UC Davis
Feb. 2, 2013
DAVIS, Calif. - To call it a physical match wouldn't do the competition in the pool against No. 14 Indiana and No. 12 UC Davis justice. All the physicality was to Indiana's advantage though, as the Hoosiers were able to pull off the upset and win their first match against a ranked opponent this season 9-8 at the Schaal Aquatic Center in Davis, Calif.
Jet lag wasn't an issue for the Hoosiers as IU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead within the first minute and a half of the first quarter behind goals from Shelby Taylor and Colleen McNaught. The Aggies scored two more of their own, and the first quarter closed out in a draw. The match would be tied six more times before the final buzzer sounded.
Multiple Hoosiers were able to score on offense this match, something that had hindered them during the Michigan Kick-Off. Colleen McNaught, Meghan Lappan, and Jakie Kohli scored twice for Indiana, while Shelby Taylor, Shae Fournier, and Rebecca Gerrity each had one.
Once again, defense proved to be Indiana's strong point, and the Hoosiers we able to pull out the W in such a close match mostly because of their defensive efforts. The score was tied at eight with two and half minutes left in the fourth quarter when redshirt senior Jakie Kohli stole the ball and finished at the other end with a goal, putting IU up 9-8. Kohli and junior Shae Fournier each had five steals for the Hoosiers.
With 22 seconds left in the match, UC Davis earned a power play opportunity and chance to tie the game, but freshman goalie Jessica Gaudreaurlt pulled out not one but two clutch saves and the Hoosiers won their first match out west. IU will compete in the Stanford Invitation against No. 4 University of California.
