Hoosiers Cruise Past Wagner 15-5
Feb. 2, 2014
PROVIDENCE, RI - The No. 13 Indiana water polo team overcame a sleepy start and defeated Wagner 15-5 to pick up their third win of the Brown Invitational and their fifth straight win of the season at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatic Center in Providence, RI.
For the third game in a row senior Shae Fournier grabbed the ball and scored on the Hoosiers first possession of the game. Fournier finished with two goals, two assists, and two steals. For those keeping track, Fournier now needs 12 goals to move into second in Indiana's all-time scoring list. She currently has 233 goals while Jakie Kohli holds second place with 244 goals.
Junior Rebecca Gerrity drew an exclusion and then found wide-open teammate Colleen McNaught who added a second Hoosier goal. Wagner wasn't about to go down quietly, however. They tossed in two goals of their own and tied the score with three minutes left to play in the first quarter.
The Seahawks defense wasn't giving the Hoosiers any easy looks, but good ball movement eventually got the rock to Gerrity in the middle and she tossed it in for the sore. Gerrity would go on to have four goals while only taking four shots and recording two steals.
Graduate student Allison Campbell drilled in the long ball right as the shot clock was expiring and then almost immediately added another goal to give Indiana a 6-3 lead to start the second quarter. The Hoosiers never looked back.
Meghan Lappan, Katie Contreras, Amanda Redfern, and Erin Pannek added to the goal count and Indiana cruised to a final 15-5 victory. Five different Hoosiers tallied double assists on the match. Goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault finished with 11 saves. Indiana will play No. 20 Pacific in their final match of the Brown Invitational at 1:00 p.m. EST.
