No. 14 Indiana can't Ride Momentum, Fall to No. 3 UCLA
Feb. 3, 2013
PALO ALTO, Calif. - If No. 14 Indiana could have played the entire game the way they played the first quarter against No. 4 University of California Saturday morning at the Avery Aquatic Center at Stanford University, they would have won in decisive fashion. Instead, a shaky third quarter caused the Hoosiers to fall to the Golden Bears 12-7.
Three goals in the first five minutes by Jakie Kohli, Meghan Lappan, and Rebecca Gerrity had the Hoosiers smelling victory early on. A goal from half way across the pool at the buzzer by Colleen McNuaght put the Hoosiers up 4-1 at the end of the third.
Unfortunately for Indiana, the Hoosiers offense stalled in the second quarter, not scoring a single goal, and the Golden Bears were able to tie the score making it 4-4 at the half. A few miscues on defense by IU gave Cal a quick two goals to start the third quarter, and the Hoosiers were never able to recover, giving up eight goals total in the third and fourth quarters.
The Golden Bears made several half-time adjustments on defense as well, limiting Indian's touches with the ball and rarely allowing the ball to get to the center forcing several players to take difficult outside shots.
Sophomore transfer Rebecca Gerrity ended the game with 2 goals, while Kohli, Lappan, Katie Contreras, Colleen McNaught, and Amanda Redfern all ended the contest with one. The physical play in the water led to little goalie action. Indiana's Jessica Gaudreault finished with two saves, the same number as Cal's goalie.
Indiana will play No. 11 Hawaii at 5:00 pm Pacific Time tonight.
