PALO ALTO, Calif. -
The No. 14 Indiana water polo team will be able to get back on their flight to Bloomington with a victory at Stanford under their belt. The Hoosiers took down Hartwick 9-6 in their first conference showing of the 2013 season at the Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto, Calif.
Redshirt senior Jakie Kohli had her best offensive game yet after recovering from season ending shoulder surgery last season. Kohli finished the game with five goals for the Hoosiers. She now has 198 goals in her career- nine goals away from becoming third on IU's all-time record books.
"It was nice to see Jakie find her grove offensively. Having her back has been a big boost for our team. Hopefully she can carry this over to our first conference tournament in two weeks," said coach Berry King.
The rest of the Hoosier team picked up their efforts on defense and finished the game with 22 steals over all, nine alone coming from the third quarter. Meghan Lappan began the third quarter with two steals in the first minute alone. The second steal was followed by a perfect assist to Rebecca Gerrity who finished on the other end with a goal. Gerrity had two goals on the match.
Goalie Jessica Gaudreault had seven saves on 22 shots on goal for IU. Sophomore Shelby Taylor had one goal and so did junior Shae Fournier.
Their win over Hartwick gave the Hoosiers a seventh place finish in the Stanford Invitational. The Hoosiers are now 3-6 overall, 1-0 in their conference. The Hoosiers are off a week before they travel to Lewisburg, PA on Feb. 16-17 to compete in the Bison Invitational at Bucknell University where they will face Hartwick again. The Bison Invitational will be Indiana's first true conference tournament of the season.
