PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 15 Indiana Hoosiers (2-4) women's water polo opened the Stanford Invitational on Saturday with a 9-1 loss at the hands of No. 2 USC. The Hoosiers hung tough with the Trojans, trailing 1-0 after one quarter, but USC scored a combined eight goals in the second and third periods to separate.

"I thought we competed defensively for the most part," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "Their press created some problems for us on the offensive end, but there are certainly some things to build on going forward as we prepare for the rest of the weekend."

Lauren Wyckoff scored the lone Hoosier goal on a backhand from the post after an assist by Shae Fournier with two minutes to play in the third quarter.

Cassie Wyckoff had a solid performance in the cage for the Cream and Crimson, knocking down 12 of USC's 31 shot attempts.

USC scored the first goal of the contest at the 6:20 mark of the opening period, converting a five-meter penalty. The Trojans followed that up with three second quarter goals, including two on power plays to take a 4-0 lead into halftime.

The Trojans continued to take advantage of opportunities in transition during the third period, notching three scores in the opening 3:05 of the second half to increase their lead to 7-0, until Wyckoff found the net to get the Hoosiers on the board.

USC added two goals in the final 1:18 of the third period to make it a 9-1 advantage.

The Hoosiers had an opportunity during the fourth quarter to get on the board again after Meghan Lappan earned a five-meter penalty. Köhli's attempt at the penalty shot was deflected, but the Burnaby, B.C. native grabbed her own miss and earned an exclusion. That kick-out turned into a close-range chance for Kelsey Campbell, but her lob was stopped by the Trojan goalkeeper.
