Feb. 9, 2014
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 13 Indiana bounced back in a big way, defeating Sonoma State 18-5 in their second match of the Triton Invitational at the Canyonview Aquatic Center at UC San Diego. Three different Hoosiers recorded hat tricks and two netted a pair as the Hoosier offense took over.
Sophomore center Candyce Schroeder drew an exclusion and got the ball to senior Shae Fournier who took advantage of the 6-on-5 opportunity and scored the first goal. The Hoosiers began to add to their lead very quickly, and they took a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Indiana was very active with the ball as nine different Hoosiers tallied at least one assist. Senior Shae Fournier finished the match with three goals, two assists, and two steals. Her helpers, combined with the two she totaled against Cal State Northridge, pushed Fournier up two spots into third on IU's all-time assist record, passing Kristen Zernicke and Jackie Kohli who had 133 and 134 assists for their careers. Sitting with 137 dimes, Fournier only needs three more to pass Lauren Wyckoff for second with 139 and 15 to pass Brooke Zimmerman for the all-time record at 151.
Goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreailt found Katie Contreras in the sprint down the pool. She added the final goal of the first half, putting Indiana up 12-3. Gaudreault, who finished the match with nine saves, set a new career high with three assists, all of which came on perfectly timed long passes.
Senior Amanda Redfern threw the ball in the goal off of a one-touch pass from teammate Erin Pannek, earning her third goal of the match in the fourth quarter. Redfern, Fournier, and graduate student Allison Campbell each recorded hat tricks in the match.
Indiana will face No. 8 San Diego State tomorrow morning at 10:40 am PT.
