No. 13 Indiana Takes Down No. 8 San Diego State
Feb. 10, 2014
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 13 Indiana water polo team earned their first top-10 win of the season at the expense of No. 8 San Diego State. The Hoosiers took down the Aztecs by a final score of 10-6 at the Canyonview Aquatic Center at UC San Diego.
For the first three minutes of the match it seemed as if it was about to be a defensive battle. Multiple turnovers and shot clock violations kept either team from shooting in the initial seconds.
Senior Shae Fournier grabbed a steal and drove down the length of the pool to net the matches opening goal, and it wasn't long before the rest of the Hoosiers followed suit.
Shelby Taylor got the ball to graduate student Allison Campbell who scored on the power play and, not long after, junior Colleen McNaught added another to force SDSU to take a timeout. Rebecca Gerrity and Shelby Taylor each added one goal of their own and the Hoosiers ended the half with a 5-1 lead.
The Aztecs opened the second half on a quick 5-0 run, taking the lead for the first time. Gerrity then drew an exclusion, got the ball to an open Fournier who then rocketed it in to tie the game. Fournier finished the match with two goals, two assists and six steals.
Colleen McNaught found Schroeder in the middle, who muscled the ball in and the Hoosiers were back again on top. Shelby Taylor, McNaught, and Gerrity all padded the lead in the fourth quarter, and IU ran away with the 10-6 final score, upsetting the No. 8 team in the country.
The Hoosiers will face No. 15 UC Davis at 5:20 pm PST to battle for 9th and 10th place at the Triton Invitational.
