LEWISBURG, Penn. -
It was the same team but a different result for the No. 12 Indiana water polo team when they took on No. 17 Hartwick at the Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Penn. Despite an impressive comeback, the Hoosiers fell to the Hawks 8-7.
University of Maryland transfer Rebecca Gerrity got her second start of the season for the Hoosiers. Her first was in IU's 9-6 win over Hartwick two weeks ago in the Stanford Invitational. Gerrity wasted little time before scoring the first goal of the match for Indiana. She finished the contest with a hat trick.
Indiana also welcomed back freshman center Candyce Schroeder in her first match back since the Michigan Kick-Off. Schroeder was out recovering from a hand injury. She had two steals for IU.
The Hoosiers took plenty of shots in the in the first two quarters but couldn't get around Hartwick's goalie. After another goal by Gerrity, the score was 3-2 at the end of the half.
Hartwick was able to score a quick two in the opening of the third, but IU countered with goals from junior Shae Fournier on a power play and Jakie Kohli.
Kohli added a point late in the third with an impressive move around three defenders for the goal. Gerrity added a third goal and Colleen McNaught was able to score the final goal to tie the game at 7 with four minutes and thirty seconds left.
A goal off a power play sealed the win for the Hawks with a minute left and the Hoosiers move to 3-7 (1-1) on the season. Freshman goalie Jessica Gaudreault had seven saves, two assists, and four steals in the contest. Indiana's next match is against Villanova this evening at 4:10 pm EST.
