RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
The No. 11 Indiana water polo team squeezed out a tough 9-8 overtime victory over tournament host Cal Baptist in their opening match of the Lancer Invitational at the Lancer Aquatic Center.
As the they've done so often this season, the Hoosiers scored the opening goal of the game, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead over the Lancers. This time the initial goal was netted by redshirt senior and team leading scorer Jakie Kohli.
The Southen California heat did nothing to slow down Kohli all match. She finished with a team-high four goals, one assist, and two steals for Indiana.
Almost immediately after Kohli's goal, sophomore Colleen McNaught was able to draw the 5-meter and junior Shae Fournier finished with the goal, making it a 2-0 Hoosier lead early on in the match. That was as much separation as Indiana was able to get for the rest of the match. The Lancers answered with two more goals of their own and kept the score tied or within one for the majority of the match.
A beautiful skip goal by Meghan Lappan gave IU the 6-5 lead with four minutes to play, but once again Cal Baptist countered. The Lancers had once last chance to score with the clock winding down, but Lappen stole the ball and sent the match to overtime.
Their first overtime battle of the season didn't start as well as they'd hoped with Cal Baptist scoring almost immediately.
A long goal from Shae Fournier at the buzzer once again tied the score at the end of the first overtime period. Kohli scored her fourth goal with a minute left to play, and freshman Candyce Schroeder sealed the deal with one of her own with just 36 seconds left on the clock.
Indiana beat the Lancers with a final score of 9-8. The Hoosiers face Wagner at 6:00 pm PT.
