No. 11 Indiana Survives Against Wagner, Remains Undefeated in Second Trip Out West
March 16, 2013
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Instead of their usual hot start, No. 11 Indiana was forced to come from behind to defeat Wagner to remain undefeated for the second tournament in a row at the Lancer Invitational at the Cal Baptist Aquatic Center. The 9-6 victory extends IU's win streak to seven.
Wagner came out firing on all cylinders, scoring a quick two on the unsuspecting Hoosiers before transfer Rebecca Gerrity was able to put Indiana's first point on the scoreboard.
Gerrity's goal came off the perfect ball placement from teammate Colleen McNaught. McNuaght has had a hand in many of the Hoosier's past goals. She finished the game with four more assists, making her the team's assist leader for the second straight year.
One goal from Jakie Kohli and another from junior Shae Fournier off a 5-meter tied the score 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Indiana was taking many shots, but too many balls were either hitting the post or blocked by Wagner's goalie, and the Hoosiers ended the half tied once again at 4-4.
Halftime adjustments were quickly made and both Kohli and Fournier were able to score almost immediately at the start of the third quarter, giving Indiana their first lead of the match. Shelby Taylor tacked on another and Indiana took a 7-5 lead heading into the fourth.
Ten saves from freshman goalie Jessica Gaudreault kept IU in the lead for the rest of the match, ending with a final score of 9-6. The Hoosiers head to San Diego to compete in their opening match of the Aztec Invitational against No. 8 Hawaii.
