No. 14 Indiana Edges Out No. 15 UC Davis in a Tight One
March 16, 2014
DAVIS, Calif. - The No. 14 Indiana water polo team (11-2) secured their victory over No. 15 UC Davis with a major defensive play in the final seconds of the match. A Shelby Taylor steal with less than two seconds on the clock gave the Hoosiers a 11-10 victory in the re-match at the Schaal Pool in Davis, Calif.
Indiana senior Shae Fournier opened the match on a fast-break goal, sending the Hoosiers up 1-0 early. Fournier, IU's all-time leading scorer, had four goals, five steals, and an assist on the afternoon.
As they would do so often during the rest of the match, Davis scored their opening goal on a power play. Eight of the Aggies 10 points came off six-on-five opportunities.
Davis was able to add three more goals in the opening quarter, and despite a bullet from junior Summer Creighton, finished out the third quarter with a 4-2 lead.
Summer Creighton opened the second quarter with another Hoosiers goal, and after an assist from freshman Ellie Stott, Fournier was able to tie the score at 4-4. Junior Rebecca Gerrity was able to work her way in the middle and pick up three 5-meter opportunities in the opening half for Indiana. Both Stott and Gerrity added goals themselves and Indiana took a resounding 8-6 lead at halftime.
UC Davis was awarded four power-plays in the third quarter and converted on three of them, tying the score at 9-9 by the end of the third.
The fourth and final quarter was a physical battle. With three-and-a-half minutes to go both Shelby Taylor and senior Meghan Lappan added back-to-back Indiana goals, giving the Hoosiers an 11-9 lead. But, once again, Davis earned an IU exclusion and scored, moving to within one with one minute on the clock.
With two five second on the clock, and Davis on the fast-break, Shelby Taylor sprinted down the pool and came up with the steal to solidify the Hoosier victory. Indiana now moves to 11-2 on the season. The Hoosiers will face No. 8 San Jose State on Tuesday at the Spartan's home pool at 4:00 p.m. PT.
