SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The No. 11 Indiana water polo team made a furious comeback attempt against Cal State Northridge, but just couldn't get the final goal in the net as they fell to the Matadors 8-7 in their final game of the Aztec Invitational in the Aztec Aquaplex on the San Diego State campus. Starting with their trip to Pomona, Indiana finished 7-3 in their 10 day trip to California.
Northridge jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before sophomore Colleen McNaught put a point up on the scoreboard for the Hoosiers. McNaught, who had three goals, one assist, and one steal on the match, capped off a truly impressive weekend in the pool.
The team's assist leader also happens to have one of the most accurate shots on the team, and it showed this weekend with nine goals, 11 assists, and nine steals.
Junior Shae Fournier was able to score on the 5-meter following another goal from McNaught to bring the Hoosiers back within two, leaving Indiana down 5-3 at halftime.
Goals from Rebecca Gerrity, Summer Creighton, and Candyce Schroeder off the dime from McNaught tied the score at 7-7 with two minutes left to play before Northridge scored again. The Hoosiers had several chances to tie it again, but just couldn't get the last goal, losing 8-7.
Indiana will travel to Erie, Penn. next Saturday to take on Notre Dame Ohio and Gannon.
